After School

  • FHS IB Junior Camille McGriff sails with club members on Friday afternoons.

  • As the club doors open each school day at 3pm, members are arriving by school bus or dropped off by parents knowing their children have a safe and supportive environment for their afternoons.

Our program offers an afternoon of recreation and enrichment including art, music or swim lessons on Fridays. New programs from some of our High School students have added a sailing class and photography coming in the spring. Our Master Gardener volunteers work with club members in our “outdoor classroom” garden raising lettuce, carrots and Brussel sprouts that become healthy snacks in our club kitchen.

The heart of our afternoon is the “Power Hour” of homework time, with committed students from Fairhope High School and Bayside Academy along with other community volunteers.

The impact on grades is measurable. So is the impact on lives – as these role models encourage, mentor and connect with our club members.

Some twenty FHS International Baccalaureate students volunteer on a committed schedule – many of them taking part in the Tonsmeire Scholarship Partnership. In return for two hours a week of tutoring, these students receive funding support toward their annual IB fees. The hours help satisfy the IB requirement for community service, and several are planning major club projects.
